Synopsis
The Scarlet Empress (1934) is Josef von Sternberg's historical drama starring Marlene Dietrich, and you can watch online on iFILM. A young German princess is shipped off to wed the heir to the Russian throne — the half-witted Grand Duke Peter, nephew of the reigning empress. The court receives her as a well-bred broodmare, brought in to freshen the Romanov line.
What she finds instead is a cold husband, a foreign tongue, and a palace full of plotters. Dietrich's heroine learns the rules fast: she takes lovers, among them the dashing Count Alexei, bears a son, and slowly hardens from a bewildered outsider into a woman ready to seize the crown. Sam Jaffe plays Peter as a grotesque man-child, and his unraveling clears her path to becoming Catherine.
Von Sternberg barely glances at the history book. His Russia is a baroque fever dream of looming gargoyles, candle smoke, and furs, built on a soundstage as a set for sensuality and power. Watch it for the imagery and for Dietrich at the height of her screen command — a rare spectacle for fans of old Hollywood and pure visual cinema. Stream The Scarlet Empress (1934) online on iFILM.
