Tokyo Vice (2022) is an HBO Max crime drama you can watch online on iFILM, based on Jake Adelstein's non-fiction account of his years covering the police beat for Japan's biggest newspaper. Ansel Elgort plays Adelstein, the first Western staff reporter in the Yomiuri Shimbun's crime division, navigating a city that does not give up its secrets easily.

The Tokyo he finds is nothing like the postcard version. Underneath the neon is a world of yakuza debt, unlicensed gambling halls, and corrupt pressure that moves in every direction. His contact is Detective Katagiri, played by Ken Watanabe, a veteran organized-crime officer who helps Jake understand exactly how much danger he is in. Rachel Keller plays Samantha, a hostess bar worker whose survival depends on the same underworld from a completely different angle.

Michael Mann directed the pilot and his signature — blue-tinted nights, rain-slick streets, and a city that feels genuinely threatening — runs through the whole series.
