Synopsis
Flesh and the Devil (1926) — watch online on iFILM — is a silent melodrama directed by Clarence Brown for MGM. Lifelong friends Leo and Ulrich swear loyalty as boys. Then Leo meets Felicitas at a party — married, unattainable, and impossible to forget.
A duel earns Leo a three-year military exile. He comes back to find Ulrich has married her. The film squeezes friendship, desire and betrayal into a tight triangle with no comfortable exit. Greta Garbo is the reason to watch: commanding and deliberately seductive, she made audiences forget they were reading title cards. Her real-life romance with co-star John Gilbert was already underway during filming, and the camera caught something the script alone could not have written.
