Synopsis
A Page of Madness (狂った一頁, 1926) is a Japanese silent avant-garde film you can watch online on iFILM. Teinosuke Kinugasa directed it as a drama edging into horror — barely an hour long, and told without a single explanatory title card.
A former sailor takes a janitor's job at a mental asylum so he can stay near his wife, locked away there for years after she tried to drown their child and then herself. The old man quietly plots to free her. The picture refuses to separate reality from her delusions: dissolves, flickering light and sudden dance blur together until you stop knowing whose eyes you are looking through.
The film was thought lost for half a century until Kinugasa found a print in his own storehouse in 1971. It now stands as one of the cornerstones of Japanese experimental cinema — not an easy night in, but essential for anyone curious about how far silent film could push pure image.
