Synopsis
The Baby of Mâcon (1993) is Peter Greenaway's ice-cold baroque parable, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Inside a 17th-century theatre, a play is staged for a young aristocrat — until the line between performance and real cruelty quietly dissolves.
In a town wrecked by famine, a grotesque old woman gives birth to a stunningly beautiful boy, and the crowd declares him a saint. His older sister (Julia Ormond) moves fast: she sells the infant's blessings to pilgrims and claims to be his virgin mother. Then she tries to seduce the bishop's son (Ralph Fiennes), and the Church answers with a punishment of genuine horror.
Greenaway frames every shot like a moving old-master canvas — rigid symmetry, heavy fabrics, gorgeous surfaces wrapped around brutal content. The film scandalized Cannes and is not for the squeamish. But for anyone drawn to radical art cinema and baroque excess, it leaves a mark few films match. Stream The Baby of Mâcon (1993) online on iFILM.
