Synopsis
Cleopatra (1999), Season 1 — watch online on iFILM: a two-part TV miniseries built around the Egyptian queen's two defining alliances with Rome.
Part one finds Cleopatra in exile. Her brother Ptolemy and sister Arsinoe have taken Egypt while Julius Caesar (Timothy Dalton) arrives from Rome to collect a debt the country cannot pay. She negotiates her way back onto the throne; Caesar provides the military weight and stays for other reasons. She gets her crown, he gets an heir. Part two begins with the knives in the Senate. Caesar's death dismantles the arrangement that kept Egypt safe, and Rome's power vacuum needs to be read quickly. Mark Antony (Billy Zane), now co-ruler of the empire, becomes both the obvious political move and something harder to calculate.
Leonor Varela plays Cleopatra as someone who is always thinking a move ahead — and that choice makes the two-part run feel like a character study rather than a historical spectacle. Stream Cleopatra Season 1 all episodes online on iFILM.
