Synopsis
Beyond Rangoon (1995) is an American political thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Director John Boorman drops a grieving American doctor, Laura Bowman, into the middle of Burma's real 1988 uprising — the crackdown where the military fired on student protesters in Rangoon.
Patricia Arquette plays Laura, who traveled with her sister to escape the memory of her family's violent death, only to lose her passport and her chance of getting out. A local guide agrees to move her toward the Thai border. Frances McDormand is the sister who got back on the plane and doesn't know if Laura is alive. Filmed in Malaysia as a stand-in for Burma, the film threads a personal grief through documented historical violence without turning either into a backdrop for the other.
More precise than most Hollywood political dramas of its era. Stream Beyond Rangoon online on iFILM.
