Synopsis

A Passage to India (1984) is David Lean's final film — a meticulous historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Judy Davis plays Adela Quested, a young Englishwoman who travels to British India in the 1920s to decide whether to marry a local magistrate, and finds herself caught in something far beyond a romantic dilemma. Victor Banerjee co-stars as Dr. Aziz, and Peggy Ashcroft plays the quietly perceptive Mrs. Moore.

An excursion to the Marabar Caves ends in accusation. What happened inside — or didn't — becomes the fault line between two worlds that were never meant to understand each other. Lean adapts E. M. Forster's novel without softening its structural unease: the colonial setting isn't backdrop, it's the argument.

At 164 minutes, the film runs at the pace of a man who'd been making epics for three decades and had nothing left to prove. Ashcroft took home the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress; the film competed for eleven more Oscars that year. Score by Maurice Jarre, cinematography by Ernest Day.
