Synopsis
Hell in the Pacific (1968) is director John Boorman's two-man war film — stream it online on iFILM. The two men are Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune. No supporting cast, no cutaways to command posts or families back home, just the pair of them on a small uninhabited Pacific island for 103 minutes.
An American pilot and a Japanese naval officer are stranded on opposite ends of the same atoll. They speak different languages and can't negotiate, surrender, or fight effectively on their own. First they try to starve each other out. Then to outsmart each other. Then they build a raft, because getting off the island requires two people. The whole film watches that reluctant shift happen without a word of explanation.
Boorman was interested in forced proximity — what happens when the enemy is too close to keep abstract. Lalo Schifrin scored it. Watch Hell in the Pacific online on iFILM.
