Synopsis
Shōgun (1980), Season 1 is the five-part historical epic you can watch online on iFILM. Early in the 17th century, English navigator John Blackthorne survives a shipwreck on the coast of Japan and finds himself a prisoner in a world whose rules he cannot read.
The season follows the outsider step by step. A hostile lord first sentences him to die; then the powerful Toranaga pulls him out of prison, takes him on as an aide and renames him Anjin-san. Blackthorne starts learning the language and the samurai code, tutored by the noblewoman Mariko, and slowly realizes he is now a piece on the board in a war between Toranaga and his rival Ishido for the title of shogun. The bond that grows between Blackthorne and Mariko reshapes him more than any battle does. Every scene turns on the gap between two civilizations, where the wrong word can cost a head.

After Lord Toronaga rescues Blackthorn from prison, he enlists him as his aide and names him, 'Anjin-san'. Mariko is directed to tutor Anjin-san in the language and customs of Japan.
S1·E3Part 3
Blackthorne and Mariko begin a romance; Toronaga continues to build his army for a battle with Ishido. Anjin-san proves his mettle during an earthquake and is honored by Toranaga for bravery. Mariko's husband Buntaro, arrives in Anjiro.
S1·E4Part 4
Anjin-san's assimilation of Japanese ways is evident in his exemplary conduct. Toranaga decides to return the Erasmus to Anjin-san. Mariko tells Father Alvito of a plot to murder a Christian lord on the Council of Regents.
S1·E5Part 5
Treachery, tragedy and turns of events occur. Toronaga becomes SHOGUN after the defeat of Lord Ishido. Mariko is killed in the final battle at Osaka Castle. Heartbroken, but resolute, Blackthorne begins construction of another ship.
