About

Synopsis

"The Dover Boys at Pimento University" (1942) is a Warner Bros. cartoon you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Chuck Jones as a full-on parody of the Rover Boys — a wildly popular American boys' novel series from the early 1900s.

Three goody-two-shoes brothers — Tom, Dick, and Larry Dover — race to rescue their fiancée from the sneering Dan Backslide, voiced with gleeful villainy by Tedd Pierce. Mel Blanc handles much of the rest of the cast. What makes this nine-minute cartoon genuinely important is what Jones was testing under the hood: rapid pose-to-pose cuts with frames held at extremes, a technique so far ahead of its time that Warner executives nearly shelved it. A decade later, that same approach became the foundation of the UPA animation style. Stream it on iFILM.
