Synopsis

Walter Bridge (Paul Newman) is a corporate attorney who has organized his life and everyone in it according to a fixed idea of what's correct. His wife India (Joanne Woodward) has spent years accommodating that arrangement. Their children are less willing: a daughter leaves for New York with vague ambitions, a son enlists, the youngest remains and watches. Newman and Woodward — married to each other off-screen — play the couple's private distance with a specificity no casting call could have produced.
