Dr. David Marrow (Neeson) recruits a small group of insomniacs for what he calls a sleep study. The location: Hill House, a vast and isolated estate with a century of dark legend attached to its walls. The place was built by textile baron Hugh Crain, and whatever he left behind never fully departed. Nell (Lily Taylor) arrives thinking she is just another test subject — but the house seems to have chosen her specifically.
