Synopsis
Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko (漁港の肉子ちゃん, 2021) is an animated family drama you can watch online, warm and funny in equal measure. Nikuko is a loud, plump, forever-falling-for-the-wrong-guy single mom who lives with her daughter on an old fishing boat in a small harbor town. She laughs loud enough to fill the docks and eats like three people.
Her daughter Kikuko is the opposite: quiet, watchful, wishing she could just blend in at middle school. The film follows the small storms of growing up — shifting friendships, half-said things, the secret embarrassment of a mother who's too much — until a revelation from the past threatens the tender, clumsy bond the two share. Directed by Ayumu Watanabe at Studio 4°C, with Shinobu Otake voicing Nikuko.
The hand-drawn port practically breathes: cats, gulls, the salt and fish smell of the sea. The story takes its time, stacking up tiny moments and then landing an emotional punch right when you've let your guard down.
