Synopsis
A Translator (Un traductor, 2019) is a Canadian-Cuban drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Rodrigo and Sebastián Barriuso. When hundreds of children exposed to radiation after the explosion at the Pripyat nuclear plant are sent to Cuba for treatment, Malin — a Russian-literature professor at the University of Havana — is assigned to translate at the hospital.
He knew the language from novels and poetry. Nothing in that world prepared him for a children's ward. Rodrigo Santoro plays a man quietly coming undone, not from a single blow but from prolonged proximity to suffering he cannot fix. The film draws from the real experience of the Barriusos' own father, who served in exactly that role in Havana during the late 1980s.
