Synopsis
Ride Like a Girl (2019) is a fact-based drama you can watch online on iFILM. It follows Michelle Payne, the jockey who became the first woman ever to win the Melbourne Cup, Australia's biggest race on the turf.
Michelle is the youngest of ten children in a family of horse riders. Her mother died when she was a baby, leaving her father, a former stablehand played by Sam Neill, to raise them all. From early on she dreams of the big races, and a sport run by men keeps telling her she doesn't belong. Teresa Palmer plays a stubbornness that bends after neither injuries nor rejections. The film's quiet heart is Michelle's brother Stevie Payne, a strapper with Down syndrome who appears here as himself.
This is the directing debut of actress Rachel Griffiths, and it leans not on suspense — the ending is already history — but on what the win cost. Shot warmly, without melodrama, at real racecourses with real horses. A solid family watch for anyone who likes sports stories built around an actual person.
