Synopsis
Edward II (1991) is a British historical drama directed by Derek Jarman that you can watch online on iFILM. The film adapts Christopher Marlowe's Elizabethan stage play: King Edward II (Steven Waddington) takes the throne and immediately elevates his lover Piers Gaveston (Andrew Tiernan) — a man of low birth — to a position the entire court regards as an affront.
Gaveston's arrogance turns resentment into conspiracy. Lord Mortimer and Queen Isabella — Tilda Swinton, playing her less as a scorned wife and more as a coldly patient tactician — move to dismantle both the favourite and eventually the king himself. Jarman collapses the centuries deliberately: riot police stand beside courtiers in period dress, turning a 14th-century power struggle into a statement about desire and intolerance that carries well past its setting.
