Synopsis
Queen Christina (1934) is Rouben Mamoulian's historical romance, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Greta Garbo plays the 17th-century Swedish monarch who took the throne as a child and rules like a man — booted, in the saddle, sword at her hip.
Christina is tired of a court that wants her married off and producing an heir. Snowbound at a country inn, dressed as a young man, she shares a room with Antonio, a Spanish envoy played by John Gilbert. He has no idea his roommate is the queen — so for once she is wanted for herself, not her crown. Then the cost comes due: keep Sweden, or keep the one person worth giving it all up for.
Mamoulian built the film around a woman who never fit the part her birth assigned her. The closing shot — Garbo at the ship's rail, told by the director to think of nothing at all — became one of the most studied final frames in early sound cinema. If you love old-Hollywood glamour and a heroine with steel in her, this one lands. Stream Queen Christina (1934) online on iFILM.
