Synopsis
The Gay Divorcee (1934) is the musical comedy you can watch online on iFILM — the first film to bill Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers as a genuine team.
American dancer Guy Holden arrives in London and bumps into Mimi Glossop at the dock; the infatuation is instant. The trouble is that Mimi has other business — a divorce from her absent husband — and under the English law of the day that means staging an affair with a hired correspondent at a seaside resort. Mistaken identity handles the rest: Mimi takes the smitten Guy for the paid stand-in and treats him accordingly. Edward Everett Horton and Eric Blore keep the farce spinning.
Director Mark Sandrich gives the pair plenty of floor, and one number towers over the rest — "The Continental," which picked up the very first Academy Award ever handed out for Best Original Song and runs close to seventeen minutes. Watching Astaire and Rogers move together still feels weightless ninety years on. Stream The Gay Divorcee online on iFILM.
