Synopsis
Easy Street (1917) is a Charlie Chaplin short comedy you can watch online on iFILM. A tramp stumbles into a mission church, hears the preacher, and emerges as a policeman. His beat: Easy Street, the roughest block in a rough neighbourhood.
The street belongs to a bully played by Eric Campbell — a regular villain in Chaplin's Mutual shorts and physically about double the Tramp's dimensions. The confrontation that follows is built from physical gags that escalate cleanly from slapstick into something more formally precise. Chaplin wrote, directed and starred, as he did for nearly every Mutual short. Edna Purviance plays a settlement-house worker who gives the Tramp a reason to try. Twenty-six minutes, nothing wasted.
