Synopsis
A Dog's Life (1918) is a Charlie Chaplin short comedy you can watch online on iFILM — his first film made under full creative control at First National Pictures. The Tramp wakes up in the dirt, scrounges for food, and dodges a beat cop through a series of physical gags so precisely timed they're still fun to watch over a century later.
Then he rescues a small mongrel named Scraps from a street fight, and everything clicks into place. Two down-and-out creatures, one sleeping against the other's warm side, stealing their next meal together. Chaplin keeps it almost completely unsentimental — the comedy stays physical and fast — but the bond between the man and the dog lands hard anyway. There's also a brief romance with a dance-hall singer, and a finale that earns the warmth it ends on.
Thirty-four minutes, silent, black and white, and not a slow moment in it. Stream A Dog's Life (1918) online on iFILM.
