Synopsis

The Good Lord Bird (2020), Season 1 — watch online on iFILM. A seven-episode limited series with a western streak, adapted from James McBride's novel: one complete arc, beginning to end, no second season to wait for.

The story belongs to Henry, a teenage slave the others call Onion. Kansas, 1856: the firebrand abolitionist John Brown — Ethan Hawke, all wild eyes and scripture — mistakes the boy for a girl, "frees" him, and decides he's a good-luck charm. From there it's a long road north: run-ins with pro-slavery redshirts, a night arguing politics under Frederick Douglass's roof, a stretch on foot toward Harriet Tubman, and the slow gathering of men for the raid on the Harpers Ferry armory in the fall of 1859. Onion grows up beside a man whose faith sits somewhere between holy and unhinged.

The whole thing runs on that opening title card: all of it is true, most of it happened. Tragedy walks arm in arm with farce, and Hawke plays Brown right at the line between prophet and cartoon. Stream The Good Lord Bird Season 1 online on iFILM.
