Synopsis
Warsaw 44 (Miasto 44, 2014) is Jan Komasa's Polish war drama about the Warsaw Uprising — watch it online on iFILM. Warsaw, 1 August 1944. Five years of German occupation have worn the city down to bone, and when the signal to rise comes, the youngest take it.
Stefan works a factory job and quietly shoulders the humiliation of occupation, waiting for the right moment. He finds it — and, at the clandestine meetings before the guns come out, he finds Biedronka, a young woman whose presence makes the coming violence almost unbearable by contrast. Their story runs through street-level fighting that Komasa shoots with the chaos and compression of something that happened fast and cost everything.
The film's angle is deliberate: this is the uprising as experienced by twenty-year-olds, not commanders. No speeches, no strategy-room maps — just the gap between what they expected and what they got. Komasa later made Corpus Christi, but this is his most unguarded work.
