Synopsis
The English Game (2020), Season 1 — a period drama you can watch online on iFILM, six episodes set in late-Victorian England when football still split people by class.
A cotton mill owner in working-class Darwen brings in two Scottish players to push his local side toward the FA Cup. That puts Fergus Suter, a lad off the Glasgow docks, on the same pitch as Arthur Kinnaird, a gentleman who treats the sport as a pastime for his own kind. Wage cuts at the mill, a secret Fergus carries down from Scotland, and a match in Blackburn that turns to chaos pull at both the team and the whole notion of amateur football. The closing run heads to London and a ruling from the Football Association.
It's a self-contained season with no cliffhanger, written by Downton Abbey's Julian Fellowes. A costume drama whose argument about money in sport lands oddly close to home. Stream The English Game Season 1 online on iFILM.
