I Do

I Do (Prête-moi ta main, 2006) is a French romantic comedy directed by Eric Lartigau — watch it online on iFILM, starring Alain Chabat and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Luis is 43, single, and entirely comfortable being cosseted by his mother and five sisters. Then they collectively snap: if he won't find a wife on his own, they'll arrange one. His brilliant counter-move is to hire a woman to play his fiancée, cause such spectacular disaster at the engagement that the whole family backs off forever.

The plan recruits Gainsbourg's character as the fake bride, which is already unpromising — she's too sharp to play dumb for long, and the chemistry between them starts undermining the scheme before it's even properly launched. Director Lartigau keeps the mechanics of the farce tight, but the film's real pleasure is watching Chabat and Gainsbourg build something that feels warmer than the premise deserves.
