Season 1
Synopsis
Conversations with a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes (2022), Season 1 is a Netflix true-crime documentary you can watch online on iFILM — three episodes built around previously unheard interrogation audio of one of America's most notorious serial killers.
It opens with the disappearance of 15-year-old Robert Piest, the case that turned Gacy from a respected neighbour into the prime suspect. Episode one assembles the double life: the successful contractor who shook hands with the powerful and moonlighted as a party clown. Then comes the confession — vast, then slippery, as Gacy walks pieces of it back and the investigation has to keep pace with his shifting story. The final episode shifts away from the man, following his lawyers' insanity defence and the slow, painful work of identifying every victim and giving each one their name back.
Director Joe Berlinger frames the series around Gacy's own recorded voice and the people who worked the case rather than around shock. What the miniseries does well is keep the camera on the victims instead of admiring the monster. Stream Season 1 online on iFILM.
