Synopsis
Funny Ha Ha (2003) — watch online on iFILM — is Andrew Bujalski's debut feature, shot on 16mm for a few thousand dollars with non-professional actors. It's widely credited as the film that launched the mumblecore movement, and Bujalski himself appears in one of the roles.
Marnie is twenty-three and has no idea what comes after college. She drags herself through a temp job she finds pointless, drifts through parties, and is stuck on her friend Alex, who gives no sign of returning the feeling. Kate Dollenmayer plays her with a tight deadpan that holds back more than it shows — the film trusts the viewer to fill the gap.
Bujalski's approach is deliberately formless: conversations trail off, nothing resolves cleanly, and the camera just watches. It's an oddly faithful portrait of being young and adrift, more comfortable with discomfort than almost any film of its era. Stream Funny Ha Ha (2003) online on iFILM.
