Synopsis
Dark Blue World (Tmavomodrý svět, 2001) is a Czech war drama by Jan Svěrák you can watch online on iFILM. When Germany swallows Czechoslovakia, two airmen refuse to ground themselves and flee west.
Veteran flier František Sláma takes a gifted rookie, Karel, under his wing. Their escape runs the long way round — Poland, Libya, then England, where Czech exiles slot into the RAF and climb into Spitfires. Up against the Luftwaffe by day, the two men come back down to earth and fall for the same woman: Susan, married to a sailor away at sea. The friendship that outlasted an invasion nearly cracks over her.
Svěrák made this a few years after Kolya took the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Charles Dance turns up as the British officer drilling the new arrivals. The story leans on the real Czech pilots whose homecoming, once peace arrived, meant prison camps rather than medals. Stream Dark Blue World (2001) online on iFILM.
