Scribe (La Mécanique de l'ombre, 2016) is a slow-burn French political thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Two years after a breakdown left him jobless, mild-mannered accountant Duval takes a quiet, well-paid gig from a stranger: typing up transcripts of wiretapped phone calls in a bare apartment.

François Cluzet plays Duval as a careful, frightened man who keeps his head down and asks no questions — until the voices on the tapes start sketching out a conspiracy he was never meant to understand. His handler vanishes, a reel goes missing, and Duval finds himself squeezed between rival intelligence operatives maneuvering ahead of a French presidential election. Denis Podalydès, Sami Bouajila and Alba Rohrwacher round out the cast.

This is the debut feature of director Thomas Kruithof, and he shoots it in the chilly, analog key of 1970s paranoia thrillers — no gunfights or car chases, just mounting dread and the hum of a tape machine.
