Synopsis
The Horror of Dolores Roach (2023) is a pitch-black horror-comedy series you can watch online on iFILM. Dolores walks out of prison after sixteen years she never should have served, only to find her old Washington Heights scrubbed clean by gentrification. No job, no money, nowhere to land.
An old stoner friend, Luis, throws her a lifeline: a basement under his empanada shop, where she can live and set up shop as a masseuse. Word spreads fast about her magic hands. Then a client crosses a line he shouldn't have, and a woman with nothing left to lose snaps. The body has to go somewhere — and Luis happens to need filling for those empanadas.
Built loosely on the Sweeney Todd legend and transplanted to Latino New York, the show rides entirely on Justina Machado, who plays Dolores as victim and predator at once. Rooting for her feels deeply wrong, which is the point. Eight episodes in the first season, directed by Eduardo Sánchez. Funny and stomach-turning in the same breath.
