Synopsis
The Lost Leonardo (2021) is Andreas Koefoed's documentary about art and money, and you can watch it online on iFILM. At its center sits a wooden panel called Salvator Mundi — bought for next to nothing, later auctioned for a record 450 million dollars.
Koefoed builds the investigation like a thriller. Two American dealers turn up a darkened painting, a restorer strips away centuries of overpaint, and a panel of experts in London floats the idea that the brush might have been da Vinci's own. From there the trail runs through museum curators, the Geneva freeports, a Russian billionaire, and a Saudi prince. Whether the thing is even authentic is a question the film deliberately refuses to close.
The talking heads include art historian Martin Kemp and restorer Dianne Modestini — people who actually held the panel. The result is a rare documentary where the authorship debate matters less than the machinery of a market that moves hundreds of millions. Smart, and tenser than you'd expect.
