Synopsis
Edge of the World (2021) — watch online on iFILM. The true story of James Brooke, a British adventurer who in 1839 was appointed Rajah of Sarawak almost by accident — and then spent years trying to hold that title on his own terms.
Brooke, played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, helped Brunei's Sultan crush a tribal uprising and was rewarded with a chunk of Borneo the size of England. He turned it into a personal mission: ending piracy, breaking up slave markets, halting headhunting — while pushing back against the British Empire's plans to absorb the whole region into its machinery. Dominic Monaghan and Ralph Ineson co-star in a production shot across Malaysia, the UK, China and the US.
The film's own tagline names it: this is the real history that partly inspired Kipling's "The Man Who Would Be King." Director Michael Haussman lets Brooke's contradictions stand — idealist, colonialist, independent ruler all at once. Stream Edge of the World (2021) on iFILM.
