Synopsis
Kin-dza-dza! (1986) is a Soviet sci-fi comedy you can watch online on iFILM — directed by Georgi Daneliya, with Stanislav Lyubshin and Yevgeni Leonov. A Moscow construction foreman presses a button on a strange handheld device and ends up nowhere near the supermarket. He and a random student in a rabbit-fur hat land on the planet Pluke, in the Kin-dza-dza galaxy.
Pluke is a desert with a rigid caste hierarchy — your rank is determined by the colour of your trousers, nothing else. The locals, Patsaks and Chatlanians, have elaborate customs, rusted-out flying machines, and no interest in helping strangers get home. Vladimir and Gedevan spend most of the film trying to scrape together components for the teleporter, running into bureaucrats and opportunists at every turn.
Daneliya dressed a sharp critique of Soviet society in slapstick and nonsense vocabulary. The film's invented exclamation "Ku!" entered everyday Russian speech and stayed there. Stream Kin-dza-dza! (1986) online on iFILM.
