Synopsis
Seven Up! (1964) is the British documentary you can watch online on iFILM — a forty-minute Granada Television film that launched the long-running Up series. Director Paul Almond gathered fourteen seven-year-olds and asked them, plainly, about money, love, school, social class and what they wanted to be.
The idea behind it was bold. The crew borrowed an old Jesuit boast — give me the child until he is seven and I will show you the man — and set out to test it for real, promising to film the same youngsters again every seven years. On screen sit kids from London's rough streets and from fee-paying prep schools, a farm boy from Yorkshire, a child raised in a charity home. One discusses Cambridge as a settled fact; another has never heard the word university.
Nobody involved guessed that a single TV experiment would grow into the longest-running project of its kind, stretching across decades. This is the seed of all of it. Stream Seven Up! (1964) online on iFILM.
