Synopsis
The Clown (O Palhaço, 2011) is a Brazilian tragicomedy from Selton Mello you can watch online on iFILM. Mello also takes the lead as Pangaré, a circus clown who wakes one day unable to make anyone laugh — because he's forgotten how to feel joy himself.
The traveling Circus Esperança rattles through small-town Brazil. Father and son, Puro Sangue and Pangaré, perform as a double act, but behind the tent everything is falling apart: the truck breaks down, money runs short, and Pangaré keeps dreaming of an ordinary life with no greasepaint. He falls for someone, hunts for his real name on an ID card, sits in front of a fan in a sweltering town, and wonders for the first time who he is without the red nose.
It's a quiet, warm film about the price of making others laugh, shot with real affection for old-fashioned circus and its dusty romance. Brazil submitted it for the Oscars, and you can see why — Mello built a gentle fable where sadness and comedy sit side by side. One for fans of unhurried arthouse cinema.
