Synopsis
The Incident (1967) is a black-and-white thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Late at night, a half-empty New York subway car rolls between stations when two punks step aboard — and the train becomes a cage on wheels.
There is nowhere to run; the doors stay shut until the next stop. The two thugs, played by a debuting Martin Sheen and Tony Musante, work the passengers over one by one out of pure boredom and cruelty — an elderly couple, a Black soldier, a frightened family, a serviceman with his arm in a cast. The real tension isn't what these two will do. It's which of the bystanders will finally stand up. Almost everyone keeps staring at the floor.
Director Larry Peerce shot most of it inside an actual car, and the cramped frame squeezes you as hard as the threat does. The deep cast includes Beau Bridges, Brock Peters, Ruby Dee and Thelma Ritter. It's a brutal study of crowd cowardice that hasn't aged a frame in over fifty years. If you want suspense with no gunshot until the very end, don't miss it. Stream The Incident (1967) online on iFILM.
