Synopsis
No Way Out (1950) is Joseph L. Mankiewicz's hard-edged crime drama, free to watch online on iFILM. It marks Sidney Poitier's screen debut as Dr. Luther Brooks, the only Black physician on a prison ward.
Two wounded robbers land in his care. When one dies under the knife, the surviving brother — a venomous racist played by Richard Widmark — screams murder. Brooks demands an autopsy to clear his name, but the accusation is already loose on the streets, and both the white and Black sides of town start reaching for weapons.
Mankiewicz made this when Hollywood barely whispered about racial violence, and the film still cuts deep. Widmark's bigot is so vicious that the actor reportedly apologized to Poitier between takes. Stream No Way Out (1950) online on iFILM.
