Synopsis
The Mill and the Cross (2011) is Lech Majewski's visionary historical drama, available to watch online on iFILM. The camera steps inside a painting and sets it breathing.
Its source is Pieter Bruegel the Elder's vast canvas The Procession to Calvary, painted in Flanders while Spanish troops occupied the land. Majewski picks roughly a dozen of the hundreds of figures crowded into the frame and lets them live: the painter himself sketching, his art-collector patron, the grieving Mary. Rutger Hauer plays Bruegel, Charlotte Rampling is Mary, and Michael York appears as the merchant Jonghelinck.
Majewski spent years layering live actors over hand-built digital backdrops, so every shot reads like wet oil paint. This one isn't for everyone — dialogue is sparse and the plot dissolves into image. But for viewers willing to slow down, it offers something rare: the sense of walking into a gallery and watching the picture inhale. Stream The Mill and the Cross (2011) online on iFILM.
