Eyes Without a Face (Les Yeux sans visage, 1960) is Georges Franju's French-Italian horror film, available to watch online on iFILM. Surgeon Dr. Génessier blames himself for the crash that destroyed his daughter Christiane's face, and he will do something monstrous to give it back to her.
To the outside world Christiane is dead — her father staged the funeral. In truth she haunts his mansion behind a smooth porcelain mask while his assistant Louise lures young women to the house. One by one, the doctor tries to graft their faces onto his daughter's. It sounds like pure horror, yet Franju shoots it like a mournful fairy tale: cold light, empty corridors, Maurice Jarre's score and Eugen Schüfftan's camera turn dread into something slow and quiet. Édith Scob's masked Christiane became one of European cinema's most recognizable images.
The film nearly fell to the censors over a surgery scene that rattled 1960s audiences, then grew into a cult landmark that fed everyone from Almodóvar to the masked-killer slashers that came decades later. This isn't a jump-scare machine; it's a poetic, oddly tender horror about guilt and obsession. A perfect pick if you love older European cinema and want to see where half of modern horror actually started. Stream Eyes Without a Face (1960) online on iFILM.
