Synopsis

Little Fugitive (1953) is an American indie drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Morris Engel, Ray Ashley, and Ruth Orkin, with Richie Andrusco as seven-year-old Joey.

After a prank makes Joey believe he has killed his older brother, he bolts to Coney Island alone and spends the whole day there — riding ponies, collecting soda bottles for pocket money, eating corn, watching the ocean. His brother is out looking for him. The film just watches Joey live.

Shot entirely on location with a handheld camera, no sets, no studio, almost no script. François Truffaut later credited this picture as one of the sparks that ignited the French New Wave. It picked up an Oscar nomination for its screenplay in 1954 — unusual for something made this cheap and this independently. Stream Little Fugitive (1953) online on iFILM.
