Synopsis
"Truth and Justice" (Tõde ja õigus, 2019) — a historical drama from Estonia you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Tanel Toom. It adapts the first volume of Anton Hansen Tammsaare's five-part novel cycle, the closest thing Estonian literature has to a national epic.
Farmer Andres buys a stretch of waterlogged, worked-out land at Vargamäe and decides he'll make something of it. His neighbour Pearu starts the boundary disputes the morning they move in. Andres drains fields, hauls timber, rebuilds the house. His wife Krõõt holds the homestead together while something quietly breaks inside her. Priit Loog and Ester Kuntu carry most of the film's 165 minutes without a word wasted.
Tanel Toom shoots in unhurried, wide-eyed takes that make the Estonian countryside feel both vast and indifferent to human effort. The film was Estonia's submission for the 2020 Academy Awards in the international feature category. If you like slow-burn period drama with something real underneath the dirt, this one delivers.
