Synopsis
Insiang (1976) — watch online on iFILM. Directed by Lino Brocka, it was the first Philippine film to screen at Cannes, selected for the 1978 festival.
Insiang (Hilda Koronel) shares a cramped house in a Manila slum with her mother and her mother's aggressive young boyfriend — someone nobody wanted there. One night he crosses a line. What follows is not a story about escape or rescue. Insiang designs her own resolution, cold and deliberate, asking no one for help. Brocka photographs the barrio without softening it: the heat, the noise, no visible exit. Mona Lisa plays the mother in a way that makes sympathy for her nearly impossible to locate. The film doesn't deliver easy justice, and that's the whole point.
