All Through the Night (1942) — watch the Humphrey Bogart wartime thriller-comedy online on iFILM, directed by Vincent Sherman. Broadway bookie Gloves Donahue (Bogart) runs his days on routine: cheesecake from Miller's bakery every morning without exception. When the baker is murdered, Gloves starts asking questions out of habit as much as principle.
The trail leads through a nightclub, a missing singer, and an underground network that isn't operating for profit. Nazi saboteurs have a specific target and are close to ready. Gloves and his crew of street-level New Yorkers are the ones who know — and, for reasons that escalate quickly, the only ones in a position to do something about it.
Bogart plays it deadpan while the film tilts comic around him. Conrad Veidt and Peter Lorre bring real menace as the antagonists; a very young Jackie Gleason and Phil Silvers keep the pacing loose. For a 1942 Warner Bros. wartime picture, it has an unusually light touch. Stream All Through the Night (1942) online on iFILM.
