Synopsis
Gaslight (1940) — watch online on iFILM. This British thriller from director Thorold Dickinson adapts Patrick Hamilton's stage play: a Victorian bride named Bella moves into the house where her aunt was murdered, only to find that her new husband has reasons of his own for wanting to be there.
Anton Walbrook plays the husband — precise, charming, and quietly remorseless. He's after the jewels the killer never found, and keeping Bella doubting her own perception is part of the method. The gas lamps dim each night while he's in the attic; no one in the household will confirm what she sees. Diana Wynyard is Bella; Frank Pettingell plays the retired detective who's the one person unwilling to accept the husband's account.
Made four years before MGM's Ingrid Bergman remake, this version is leaner and colder. Hamilton's play is the source of the word "gaslighting" in English. Stream Gaslight (1940) on iFILM.
