Synopsis
The Fifth Seal (Az ötödik pecsét, 1976) is a Hungarian war drama you can watch online on iFILM. Budapest, autumn 1944. Arrow Cross paramilitaries are running the city. Inside a narrow bar, four old friends gather the way they always do — drink, talk, avoid the news from outside.
A fifth man drifts in: Kesai, a war-disabled photographer. The watchmaker Düritza puts a hypothetical to the group: would you rather come back as a tyrant living in splendour, or a miserable slave with a clear conscience? The debate runs late into the evening. By the following night, the question is no longer hypothetical. Directed by Zoltán Fábri, the film stars Zoltán Latinovits and György Cserhalmi.
Fábri built the whole film inside a room and a few grey streets, with no battle sequences and no heroes making speeches. The pressure comes from watching men discover, under real conditions, who they actually are. For anyone drawn to European moral cinema of that era — essential.
