Synopsis
"438 Days" (438 dagar, 2019) is a Swedish drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Jesper Ganslandt. Gustaf Skarsgård and Matias Varela play the two journalists at its center.
In June 2011, Swedish reporters Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson cross illegally from Somalia into Ethiopia to report on oil drilling in the conflict-torn Ogaden region. Five days in, they are shot and captured by the Ethiopian army. What follows is a surreal trial — terrorism charges, an eleven-year sentence — and nearly a year and a half inside Kality prison in Addis Ababa, alongside writers, journalists and politicians jailed for not bending to the regime. The story they came to tell about oil turned into a story about ink.
Ganslandt built the film directly from the journalists' own accounts and declassified records. For anyone who cares about press freedom or wants a taut docudrama where the stakes are real, it is hard to shake. Watch "438 Days" (2019) in full online on iFILM.
