Synopsis
The Brownies, or a Dream on a Winter Night (1987) is a Soviet musical short you can watch online on iFILM. A man dozes off in his armchair in front of the TV, and a band of house spirits comes to life on the screen.
From there, not a word is spoken. The whole film rides on rock-and-roll numbers written by composer Anatoly Kiselyov, their lyrics hammering home a plain message: save your water and electricity, because every resource eventually runs out. For Soviet animation the format was almost unheard of — a pure rock musical with no dialogue at all.
Director Vladimir Samsonov drops the soft oil-paint look of his early-eighties work for something rawer and harsher, a path he'd push further in the 1988 short 32 December, scored by the same group.
