Nocturna

Nocturna (2007) is a Spanish-French animated feature you can watch online on iFILM. Tim, an orphan boy, is terrified of the dark. Then the stars overhead begin winking out one by one, and he has no choice but to step into the heart of the night to find out why.

His guide is the Cat Shepherd, a towering, shaggy keeper of nocturnal order. Together they descend into Nocturna, a hidden world run by the creatures who actually make the night work: the ones who tangle children's hair as they sleep, the ones who deliver bad dreams, the ones who tend the shadows. Every creak and every shadow turns out to be somebody's job. And it falls to Tim to save this fragile machinery before the threat hanging over it leaves the world without its stars.

Directors Adrià García and Víctor Maldonado built the film on warm hand-drawn animation with a faintly gothic charm, the kind you find in old European fairy tales. This isn't a loud spectacle but a gentle story about fear turning into curiosity. It works for kids and for grown-ups who love atmospheric, off-the-beaten-path animation.
