Synopsis
The Outskirts (Okraina, 1998) is Pyotr Lutsik's pitch-black satire, free to watch online on iFILM. A handful of peasants from a forgotten village lose their land to shadowy oil interests — so they saddle up and ride toward Moscow to settle the score.
What begins as a quest for justice turns brutal and surreal. Yuri Dubrovin, Nikolai Olyalin and Aleksei Vanin play the grim-faced farmers like figures off a 1930s propaganda poster. Lutsik shot the whole thing as a deliberate throwback to early Soviet cinema: grainy black-and-white, swelling patriotic music, rough village speech. Underneath sits a savage takedown of who grabbed what during the 1990s.
It remains a cult favourite among lovers of Russian arthouse — few films skewer the decade with such cold precision. Strange, uncompromising, and nothing like the mainstream. Stream The Outskirts (1998) online on iFILM.
