Synopsis
Nine Days of One Year (1962) is an intellectual drama by Mikhail Romm, and it is worth watching online as one of the high points of Soviet Thaw-era cinema. Set among nuclear physicists in the early 1960s, it is shot with a cool, austere precision that leaves no room for sentiment. Alexei Batalov and Innokenty Smoktunovsky lead.
Gusev is consumed by his experiment and pushes toward results no matter the cost. His friend Kulikov is the ironic sceptic, eyeing the same science with weary clarity. They are bound by their work and by one woman, Lyolya, and that triangle carries the film as firmly as the research plot. During a test Gusev absorbs a dangerous dose of radiation, and the doctors are blunt: the next experiment could be his last. He walks back into the laboratory anyway. Tatyana Lavrova plays opposite the two leads.
Romm built the picture almost without music or grand gestures, working through sharp dialogue and tight close-ups — which is why it earned a name as a film that spoke to its audience as equals. It rewards anyone drawn to thoughtful black-and-white cinema about the price of knowledge and people who put the work above their own survival. Stream Nine Days of One Year (1962) online on iFILM.
